About the song:
Ring of Fire was written by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore about Johnny Cash and Junes experience falling in love. It was originally recorded and released by Anita Carter in 1963. After hearing Anita’s version, Cash claimed he had a dream where he heard the song accompanied by Mariachi horns.
“[…] I’ll give you about five or six more months, and if you don’t hit with it, I’m gonna record it the way I feel it.”Johnny Cash
As the transcription is in slowcount 4/4, there are a number of time signature changes (3/4 and 2/4) to accomodate the dropped or added beats in the phrasing. This is certainly easier than reading some very fast moving half notes in 2/4.
Marshall plays some solid meat and potatoes root and fifth basslines with variations occurring in the octave or occasionally an 8th note run.
